Most people, whether they rent or own their home, know only a limited amount of information about their air conditioning system. And most of this knowledge revolves around the basics of how to use their air conditioner. However, there are some important facts that every person using an air conditioning system should know so that they can take better care of that system now and in the future. Get to know a few of these facts and you will be able to keep your air conditioner up and running for as long as possible.

Changing Those Air Filters Really Does Matter

One of the biggest misconceptions about heating and cooling systems in general is that the so-called furnace filters (actually air filters) do not need to be changed during the months in which the air conditioner is in use. The reality is that these air filters need to be removed and replaced with clean ones a minimum of every few months no matter what time of year it is.

A dirty or clogged air filter in your air conditioning system can lead to dirt, dust, and other debris circulating in your home and throughout your air conditioning system. This can negatively impact your internal air quality and can even lead to damage to your air conditioning system.

If you or someone in your household are particularly sensitive to air quality, you will want to change your air filter more often (perhaps every month). Otherwise, it is still a good idea to stick to a schedule of every two to three months to be sure your system is functioning as well as possible and your air is as clean as possible.

There Is A Switch Outside You Need To Know About

As the seasons change and homeowners prepare to switch over from their air conditioning system to their heat, they often assume that they need only switch their thermostat over from cool to heat and be done with it. Some may also take the time to clean their outdoor air conditioning unit or put a cover over it, but that is generally the extent of the process.

What these homeowners do not realize is that there is also an on/off switch outside designed specifically for the outdoor air conditioning unit. This switch is used as a fail safe if there is a problem with the air conditioner so that it can be repaired. It is also designed to help you save money on your energy bills because it shuts off the power to the compressor.

Be sure to locate the switch and turn it off when you are done with your air conditioner for the season so you can save that money. If you cannot locate it, you can contact an air conditioning services company to help you do so.

With these facts in mind, you can be sure that you know how to take better care of your air conditioning system than the vast majority of people and get the most out of your A/C system. Click here for more info.

About Me
heating and cooling a tranformed attic

When my husband and I made the decision to transform the attic into a home office, we didn't think about how that would impact our home heating and cooling system. This space has been complete for about a year now, and it is always cold in the winter and hot in the summer. We decided that, before this winter hit, we would have an HVAC technician come out and see what could be done to improve the heating and cooling of the space. Find out what you can do to heat and cool these areas of the home here on my blog.
