The furnace is such an important component to your home, especially during the winter months. It can only do its job effectively and efficiently, though, if it's maintained year-round. If you neglect this aspect, you could be looking at costly heating repair. Prevent them from happening by taking these maintenance steps regularly.

Lubricate the Blower Motor

The blower motor is responsible for circulating warm air and sending it into your home. This integral part won't work nearly as great or last as long if you don't lubricate it every couple of months. This maintenance job isn't too difficult, fortunately.

After turning off your system, locate the oil ports. You'll then want to administer the recommended lubricant on these ports, making sure you only apply a couple of drops. You'll also want to apply the same lubricant to any blower shafts that are visible. Such a simple step will prevent the blower motor's fans from squeaking and wearing down prematurely.

Visually Inspect the Air Filter

Where a lot of homeowners go wrong with their furnace is failing to inspect its air filter periodically. Then, dirt and debris can get into your system, leading to costly repairs and part replacements. You can easily avoid these costs by checking this air filter every couple of months.

Take it out of the housing unit and hold it up outside. If you can't see any natural light pass through both sides, it's time for a new filter. To make maintenance easier going forward, though, consider installing a reusable filter. As long as you clean it at the correct intervals, these filters can be reused over and over again.

Have Vents and Duct Work Cleaned Professionally

Costly heating repairs can also happen when your home's duct work and vents get too dirty, from things like dirt and debris. To fix this potential issue, you'll want to contact professionals who offer vent and duct work cleaning.

They'll bring out their high-powered suction vacuums, which are uniquely designed to get up into residential duct work systems. These contractors will clean every surface thoroughly and quickly, as well as ensure your furnace's air ducts are free of any obstructions that would cause them to work harder.

Heating bills during the winter are probably already expensive, and you don't want to add to them just because your furnace wasn't properly maintained. All it takes is a little effort on your part and help from contractors who offer professional cleaning and inspection.

About Me
heating and cooling a tranformed attic

When my husband and I made the decision to transform the attic into a home office, we didn't think about how that would impact our home heating and cooling system. This space has been complete for about a year now, and it is always cold in the winter and hot in the summer. We decided that, before this winter hit, we would have an HVAC technician come out and see what could be done to improve the heating and cooling of the space. Find out what you can do to heat and cool these areas of the home here on my blog.
